Mr.HinkyDink's UT BLOG

MASZ NA RYJU KURWO ZAJEBANA!
I have no idea WHAT that means! Anyway, maintenance was completed today. We were down from 10AM-11AM while I put a DVD drive in the server.

UPGRADES!
No sooner had I upgraded to kernel 2.6.14.2 than did version 2.6.14.3 come out. Well, screw that. I checked the ChangeLog and it doesn't affect me much. Also, Bitch House 2004 has finally been upgraded to Patch 3355, primarily because it crashed consistently on the new kernel. It seems very stable now and I've actually been playing it (something I never do, since I prefer UT99). BOT Towers is still being weird, but it's running like it's supposed to for now. If it goes back to its old tricks I'll be dumping it. It gets more traffic when it's broken, which was never the point. Bitch House is back down to 20 kills with a 10 minute time limit.

Downtime
Linux kernel 2.6.14 was released into the wild on 10/28. BOT House & friends has been running on 2.6.11 since May and there a number of reasons I need to upgrade. Expect the place to be down for at least a day the week of 11/21 while I re-hack the kernel and upgrade the firewall.

FIXED!
Everything is fixed now. The Old Skewl maps had some kind of flag on them that wouldn't allow downloads, so I rebuilt them all and replaced them on the Web server. I have been asked several times if the Web site is open for downloading. It isn't. It only serves the files on demand. I get 500MB of storage and 25Gb of bandwidth per month (at the low, low price of $3.16/month - thank you, GoDaddy). I'm not anywhere near hitting those limits, but I don't want www.mrhinkydink.com to become a distribution (leech) point for UT mods. If you want a mod installed, drop me a line. Let me know where to get it and if I like it, I'll install it on BITCH House. However, BOT House will always remain mod-free.

-=[BOT House/OLD SKEWL!]=-
Back in November '99, I got my first AGP video card, a 16MB Voodoo 3000. It was Hot Shit at the time, and it came with a *FREE* early version of Unreal Tournament built for the Voodoo drivers. I played that version constantly until my family gave me Unreal v436 for Christmas of that year. Luckily, the old levels were 99.999% compatible with the new version and I continued to play them. Then after a hard drive crash or a system rebuild or a momentary lack of lucidity or something along those lines, the game was lost and I couldn't find the CD anywhere. UNTIL TODAY! So, BOT Towers, which was more screwed up than I realized, has been replaced by BOT House/OLD SKEWL. All the levels are fairly small, so I set it up for 6 players, ten minutes, 20 kills, just like BOT Towers'lapse into DeathMatch a couple weeks ago. I also added DM-Ariza and DM-DeathFan to BICTH House's lineup just for funsies, since those are my favorite OLD SKEWL levels. Enjoy!

UT GOES H/A!
That's right... High Availability! I ran across a cheap 600W UPS (see link below) that supports Linux (barely), so I bought it. Our biggest issue around is brownouts. You'll be humming along,, minding your own business, when suddenly the entire house goes DARK for a half a second and all the PCs in Dink's NOC bounce. Not anymore. If there's an extended outage, you'll have ten minutes of play before the UPS pulls the plug on you. Unfortunately, when it comes back online, you'll be screwed because the games don't auto-start on reboot... yet. I'm still working on that one.

BOT Towers WTF?
For some unknown reason, BOT Towers CTF decided it wanted to be a Tournament DeathMatch server yesterday. I would have jumped in to fix it right away, but it developed quite a following. I guess there is a niche for small, six player UT servers. Who knew? Anyway, it's fixed now. Or, that is, it WILL be fixed as soon as it goes idle, which doesn't appear to any time soon. My apologies to the CTF crowd, but apparently you guys are outnumbered. BTW, if you do AIM you can catch me online as "MrHinkyDink".

Got BLOG?
Dink's got BLOG. It ain't nothing fancy. No bells. No whistles. Just Blog. Here you will get news about BOT House, BITCH House, BOT Towers CTF, BITCH House 2004, and perhaps an idiosyncratic rant or two. You may post comments... or not. You have the right to remain silent. But be advised you can only input text. Links and fancy HTML won't work. Hell, you can't even put in a freakin' paragraph break! If you do post a comment, your IP is logged, but it is NOT displayed to other users. So relax.
